Speaker Bios
John Barrowman is one of the principals (with Jon Williams) in EFX-TEK, a company that designs and provides small-scale electronic controls and control accessories for prop builders at a price that anyone can afford. John has been an avid home haunter for years, and when not scaring up the respect of the neighborhood teenagers, loves to play guitar, sing, and perform in community theater. Originally educated as a nuclear engineer, John has worked as a stock and commodities broker, diamond broker, process control engineer, and security engineer, a/k/a professional thief.
Jana Beagley is celebrating her 20th year as a haunter in 2010. She has been directing haunts professionally and independently since 2004 and currently directs Nightmare Vermont, which features several stage combat fights. She is a Middlebury College alum and has 32 master hours in unarmed combat training from the Society of American Fight Directors. She lives in Vermont with her husband, Douglas, and her bunnies, Boo and Bob.
Jason Blaszczak – Screamline Studios. Operating out of Mentor Ohio since 1996, Screamline Studios has provided professional design, construction, and coordination for primarily the haunted attraction industry. They have successfully run over 24 haunted houses, have designed over 275 individual scenes and constructed over 250 since its conception. Construction entails all the lighting, sounds, props, painting and decorations needed to bring a scene to life, including putting actors in make-up and costumes for the event.
Michael Davy, born in Canton, Ohio, began his make up career with his father, Dick Davy in 1974 as a “Masker” for the Masonic Scottish Rite at age 12 where he learned basic character make up and beards. By 17 he surpassed his father’s ability to teach him and became a member of the Dick Smith “School of the Telephone”. He would correspond with Dick, sending photos of completed work which he would return with a ritique and encouragement. Mike would often spend hours on the phone with Dick who would meticulously explain techniques and formulas developed throughout this career. Upon graduation from Kent State University with a degree in Pre Law, Michael decided to pursue professional make up as a career. One summer while working as a Volusia County Ocean Lifeguard on Daytona Beach he learned that Universal Studios was about to open a Studio in Orlando. Seeing an opportunity to pursue his career in Florida he decided to stay. While in Florida he worked on many film and television projects, many with his close friend Rick Gonzales with whom he later partnered the First Halloween Horror Nights in 1990. Now Michael owns his own theatrical cosmetic business, Davy Theatrical Cosmetics developing and formulating his own line of innovative products.
Virgil Franklin is a professional composer/ educator/ clinician with a penchant for writing adventure music, film scores, and music for haunted attractions. He two degrees in music, a BA from Indiana State University and a Masters in Music Technology from The Indiana University School of Music, and 22 years of experience as a educator and clinician teaching in public school to college clinics to professional development workshops. This is Virgil’s fifth year as a clinician at MidwestHaunter’s.
Glen & Melissa Gilmore, Beth Biasella: With over 50 years of Haunted Attraction experience combined this foursome specializes in improv dialogue acting, FX make-up, Costuming and managing it all with The Legion of Terror at Bloodview haunted house. Glen is a 6 time make-up coordinator and Midwest Haunters Convention’s 2008 Ms.Scary pageant winner. Beth Biasella has worked on numerous films and is an award winning actress. Melissa is as well an award winning actress and has been the Acting Coordinator for The Legion of Terror for the last 2 years. This will be our fourth year hosting seminars at Midwest Haunters Convention and we hope to continue teaching the tricks of the trade to the new generation of haunters.
Allen Hopps has acted, designed, built, decorated and costumed haunted attractions for over 23 years 10 of those were year round haunt work in Orlando at Terror on Church st., and Skull kingdom. Allen has worked for small haunts as well as larger haunts like Universal Studios Holloween horror nights Orlando and Spookyworld. Becoming known for innovative costumes, Stilt costumes, Mask making and his work with Actors Allen has recently taken the position of artistic director at Screams Halloween park in Waxahatchie TX.
Katie Johnston has been doing makeup for what seems like her whole life, but the last 14 yrs have been focused on haunted house makeup. She has been the head make-up artist for Nightmare in Painesville, Pandora’s Box in 2008, and The Nightmare Express for 2010. She currently has two Make-up How-to videos “How to do Haunt Make-up” and “Haunt quickies” with Evilusions, and has won awards for her makeup. She loves to pass on what she has learned and can’t wait return to Midwest haunters Convention and teach again!
Mike “Tattoo” Krausert – With 20 years of experience Mike is a respected designer and leader within the haunt industry, Mike has written several instructional articles published in Haunted Attraction and HauntWorld magazines and has taught classes at the Transworld National Halloween Show, HauntCon, Midwest Haunters and the Eastern Haunters Conventions. Mike continues to promote new techniques to advance the design evolution and creative development within the haunt industry. In 2007, Mike was the recipient of the Isabella Award which honors an individual whose achievement is measured by his/her contributions towards improving and strengthening the haunt industry as a community of artists and enthusiasts and who set a positive example for others to follow. Mike lives in the Boston area and serves as the Director of Operations for Nightmare New England & SpookyWorld located in Litchfield, New Hampshire. Through the years, Mike’s attractions have been featured in Haunted Attraction, HauntWorld, 13th Hour, SkinDeep, Nickelodeon, Family Circle, & Sound and Video Contractor Magazines as well as industry videos highlighting haunts from across the U.S.
Katie “Bansheette Morningstar” Lane has been a haunted house actor for a decade, and before that grew up in the theatre. She has been designing and making costuming for over 15 years, everything from tattered zombies to lavish period pieces. Katie’s involvement in the haunt industry includes her co-ownership of Raven’s Wolf (www.ravens-wolf.com), hosting “Haunting By the Numbers” on Rotting Flesh Radio, teaching special effects makeup, training actors, and guest acting at haunts across the country.
Kelli Lieder has been playing around with various types of haunting for twenty years, but it has only been in the last seven that she has gotten hooked. She is the visionary and co-creator of “Journey to Death and Beyond” (JourneyTrails.com) located just outside Richmond, Virginia. During the past seven years she has been studying human nature as it relates to the haunt industry by watching and learning not only what works, and what doesn’t, but more importantly, why. After realizing people are more afraid of their own, natural fears, than by staged blood and gore, she has incorporated specific technicques based on her research into their haunt and has watched it grow rapidly and with rave revues using this “scare without gore” technique.
Cliff Martin has been haunting his neighborhood for decades, and is the owner of the Hacker House haunted house in Pilot Mountain, NC. A founding member of the IAHA, Cliff served six years as Treasurer on the Board of Directors. He has presented at Midwest Haunters Convention’s eductation series, Transworld seminars, and local haunt gatherings. He published multiple articles in Haunted Attraction magazine and Happy Halloween magazine. He maintains the Halloween how-to website www.scaryguys.com and produces a series of ScaryGuys how-to dvds. He maintains the regional haunt finder website www.nchaunts.com and FrightSeekers forum.

Eddie McLaurin is in his 19th year of Haunting. He owns and operates, the Woods of Terror which has won endless rankings awards including the best haunt in its county and was rated on Americas best haunts Woods of Terror has increased its attendance by 15,000 people in the last 3 years. Of course the marketing is better but word of mouth adverting is that the actors at Woods of terror are awesome, when you have great actors.
Industry veterans Roger and Beth Miller have participated and taught at some of the nation’s top haunted attractions. Their combined experience as actors, make-up artists and instructors, their use of male and female perspective and their creative views of the haunted attraction industry form a unique blend of experience that has served to help owners, operators and artists for over 15 years . Josh Monroe has been in the haunt industry for over a decade. He started his career at Bloodview haunted house, Broadview Hts. OH, and has since traveled the country teaching seminars and guest acting at other haunted houses and conventions. He relocated to Atlanta Ga. to work at Netherworld Haunted House and to persue his art career. While working at Netherworld as an actor, make-up artist, and set builder, he also did commision work for movies, television, and music video’s. Joshua also began doing custom work for other haunts and has established a large clientel in the haunt industry, selling silicone masks, body suits, sock masks, and props. Recently, he moved back to Ohio and has getting his haunt fix back where it all began……… BloodView!!!!
Leonard Pickel produced his first commercial haunted house as a fundraiser his sophomore year in college 1976. After graduation, he volunteered his expertise to the Dallas March of Dimes in Dallas and chaired their Haunted House for four years before opening his own attraction in 1987. During these years Leonard formed the basis for what later became known as the “Pickel Theory of Haunted Houses,” a high startle, low gore, high throughput approach to dark amusements, and the Triangular Grid System of Haunt design, that offered compact use of space and solid structure using thin panel construction and a four foot equilateral grid.
Leonard co-founded Haunted Attraction Magazine, founded the International association of Haunted Attractions (IAHA) and in 2004 launched his own convention, The Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Convention (HAuNTcon); “designed for Haunters, by Haunters,” this annual exposition moves to a new location each year and has become a must attend event for Haunted Attraction owners from across the US and overseas.
Scott Olson is a proffesional electrician/Haunt designer/Haunted house owner with over 15 years experience ranging from yard haunts to float acting(multiple houses in 1 season) to designing and building haunted houses.He has acted and/or participated in over 20 haunted attractions. He does design and effect lighting and has owned his own haunt for 2+ seasons, and has direct input on all actors in his haunt.
Scott Schaffer is the Emergency Medical Services Education Coordinator for the MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland Mi Michigan. He has spoken at a variety of venues on numerous topics in the medical field. He has also been a home haunter for 15 years, he belongs to the International Brotherhood of Magicians (current president of ring 212), and is a self avowed halloween fanatic.
Matthew Seel is a special fx make-up artist, set designer and actor at Bloodview Haunted House in Broadview Heights, OH.. He has 25yrs of experience in the haunt industry and at the age of 9, got his start designing sets at a small Family operated haunt in northern Ohio. Since then he had participated in many other haunts winning awards for best set design and best make-up artist before joining the Legion of Terror in 1997. Mr. Seel as part of the Legion of Terror has been Primary Avatar (second in charge) of the make up department for 3yrs and has earned the honor of best make-up 3 times.
Jeff Simmons has been acting in the theatre since he was ten years old. He has been haunting for over nine years. When he was 13 he and some friends started a home haunt out of a old barn behind his house that ran for two years. At 15 years old he took up commericial haunting and created, designed, owned/operated a half mile haunted trail called the Trail of Torment. The trail ran for 2 years. Afterwards he worked for a season at Night Stalkers HH in Millington Mi then went to Work at St. Lucifers Haunted Asylum in Flint michigan where he helps with actor training.
Scott Sliger has over 17 years in the Haunted Attraction Industry, as a designer/fabricator and performer. Scott has headed the Make-Up Departments for Gingerbread Castle in Hamburg NJ, to Madison Scare Gardens in Manhatten NY, and been part of the make up team for Halloweekends at Cedar Point and Terror Park in Ohio. Scott’s Company BONE ZONE is a supplier of horrific props for the haunted industry.

Pam Trent – I have been a face painter going on 12 years. I love face painting and body painting, but I also love the art of henna. I have had my business, Way Wicked Art for 7 years. I moved to Florida almost 2 years ago and took a position at Silly Farm Supplies, Inc. Since moving, my life has totally changed. I have painted for the Miami Dolphin Cheerleader Calendar unveiling, the Miami Dolphin games, and Bullets for Peace. I have assisted Liz Turner in organizing and planning the South Florida Face and Body Painting Guild. My knowledge of Guilds was gained from starting the Southwest Body Art Guild in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was a F.A.B.A.I.C. instructor for the first time in 2009. I attended the IMATS show in LA, the Miami Makeup Show, and was an instructor for the F.A.B.A.I.C. On The Road in New Jersey in 2008, an instructor for F.A.B.A.I.C in 2009, and an instructor of Gore at La Fete 2009.
Robin Walters, MS
In her day job, Robin works as a marketing and sales executive for a national healthcare consulting firm. While she’s been in sales for more than 20 years, her real love goes back much further. The bumper stickers on her car (“When the zombies come I’ll be ready”) let passersby know that she’s an aficionado of all things macabre. She’s studied the horror genre since she was in elementary school and is
the owner/operator of the Broadview Bloodbath (www.broadviewbloodbath.com), a charity home haunt in Columbus, Ohio.
“Brian “Gadget” Warner – Brian has been designing and manufacturing the mechanical and pneumatic systems of both machinery for the bottling industry, and pneumatic animatronics for 10 years, and has been a machinist for over a decade. His obsession with all things pneumatic has yet to be matched by any sane person. Brian has also been the Technical Director and Operations Manager for the “Nightmare in Painesville” Haunted Attraction in Painesville, Ohio from 2004- 2006. Brian is also currently the Technical Director/ Prop Builder / and head consultant at “The Nightmare Express” Haunted Attraction in Mentor, Ohio.
Jon Williams is one of the principals (with John Barrowman) in EFX-TEK, a company that designs and provides small-scale electronic controls and control accessories for prop builders at a price that anyone can afford. Jon has a particular affinity towards audio-visual media as he lives in “Hollywood.” When not assisting customers, Jon is either working in front of or behind a movie camera; sometimes as an actor (as Jon McPhalen), sometimes as a writer/director, and every once in a while as a Special FX designer. In his spare time he enjoys watching movies, playing guitar, and learning new skills like sculpting and painting that he can apply toward creating more interesting Halloween and movie props.
